Principal port of Natal, South Africa, and
second port of the republic; population
(1985) 634,000, urban area 982,000. It
exports coal, maize, and wool; imports heavy
machinery and mining equipment; and is also a
holiday resort.
Founded 1824 as Port Natal, it was renamed
1835 after Gen Benjamin d'Urban (1777-1849),
lieutenant-governor of the E district of Cape
Colony 1834-37. Natal university 1949 is
divided between Durban and Pietermaritzburg.
